I was given this communication by an unknown fellow member of a remote forum that I need to practise this to view dvd-similar quality sharpness on my sometime vhs tapes that I demand to transfer to DV for storage.

What would y'all recommend me to do this on a hi8, s-vhs camcorder and due south-vhs VCR.

I besides want to know if is better to use a moisture or dry out cleaning head kit

I take used wet type cleaning kits but I have heard that both wet and dry are non very good. New VHS tapes are apparently the best fashion to clean your VCR. Just run the tape from get-go to terminate and information technology will make clean it. Apparently though the accented best way is to open up the VCR and do information technology manually but I am non brave enough to exercise that on an expensive VCR. I wouldn't worry about information technology though unless you lot are running many tapes daily from dubious/unclean sources.

I tried cleaning my camcorder heads and it didn't seem to exercise anygood? I employ isyprocal alcohol 70% and some cotton wool and with my finger I rotated the cylinder.

Cotton swabs or Q-Tips are not a good idea as they can rip and go out cotton in the tape mechanisms. Use a caput cleaning system or just run a new tape completely through.

No since new tapes are sealed when purchased and should be very make clean. What the new tape does is option up whatsoever droppings while information technology is playing so don't employ the record again (well not in a VCR that yous desire to go on super clean).
  7. Squeamish..my field from twenty years ago.. The best manner to clean the video heads is with the inside of a brown envelope..it's the closest I found to the chamois tipped pads sony used to sell for the purpose. Declining that paper is pretty skillful.. apply dry out, hold the paper against the drum with a finger and rotate the drum manually..you will feel the head through the paper.. 3 or four times dorsum and forth will do it.
You will probably see a dark-brown or black streak on the newspaper..if it doesn't ameliorate the picture quality the heads are probably worn on abrasive tapes. An old scotch brand record run for no more than 25 seconds will buff upwardly worn heads, but it's not a good hack as they normally go out lots of droppings in the caput gap.
Q-Tips are lethal..they can chip the heads, ruining them!!

Video heads never need demagnatising because the recording bias does it automatically. Use a commercial demag wand for all metal guides etc in the record path, and also on the sound head if you are getting classy on audio..follow the instructions and employ a quality tool.

Tearing at top and bottom of the picture on old tapes is usually as a result of a slightly different tape path on an old machine, and a visible sync bar (black cake) in the lesser eye few lines is a event of the recording machine having the head switching point prepare incorrectly..they weren't as precisely set upwards as modernistic ones, pinnacle trigger-happy is the video caput drum exit guide, and bottom trigger-happy the entry guide.. Field whorl and bad tracking is usually the audio head tracking height..The sync rail is very small and beneath the audio tracks right on the bottom edge of the record..the setting is critical. I'm getting far too technical here..this lot is from retention. ;-)
I still have a Ferguson/JVC 3v29 in perfect working order from 1983, with information technology'south original heads.. The picture quality from new tapes is astounding, regular maintenance keeps these former top loaders in superb status, shame the machine is just mono...
A guy called Steve Beeching wrote some excellent video setup and service guides dorsum in the mid 80's..take a google for them.
